What people actually ask AI

Talk to anyone who has spent real time with a chatbot and you'll hear the same thing. The big questions don't go to a friend. They don't go to a doctor or a therapist or a lawyer. They go to AI, at 11pm, in a tab nobody's watching.

The questions are specific.

"I found a lump and I'm too scared to Google it because I don't want WebMD to push the worst case." "We're $40,000 in credit card debt and my husband doesn't know yet." "My boss said something to me last week that I can't bring to HR but I can't stop replaying." "I think my marriage is over and I haven't told anyone." "I've been wondering for years if I'm not actually straight." "I drink every night and I'd never tell my doctor." "My mother and I haven't spoken in eight months."

This is the pattern. People ask AI the questions they can't ask anyone else, because AI doesn't gossip, doesn't judge, doesn't have a relationship that gets weird afterward, and is available at 2am. For a lot of people, AI is the most honest conversation they're having all week. That's not a bug. It's actually one of the genuinely useful things this technology does.

The problem isn't the asking. The problem is what happens to the asking after you close the tab.

Why these chats are higher-stakes than most people realize

If you keep a journal, the journal sits in a drawer or a Notes app. If you tell a therapist, the conversation is protected by privilege and the notes are locked behind HIPAA. If you tell a friend, your friend remembers it imperfectly and has no database.

Your AI chats are different. They're often the most candid record of your interior life that exists anywhere, written in your own words, timestamped, searchable, and tied to an account with your real email address. They sit in databases on servers owned by companies you don't control. They survive the moment of asking.

That's the part most people miss. The chat doesn't end when you close the tab. It ends when the company decides it ends, or when a court orders it preserved, or when someone breaks into your account. Subpoenas happen more than people think, and the rules for AI chat preservation are still being written in real time.

A small story

Daniel is a 38-year-old finance guy in Austin. Married, two kids, runs a small team. Last fall he found a hard spot under his jaw while shaving. He didn't want to tell his wife yet because she'd just lost her dad to cancer and he didn't want to put her through the spiral if it was nothing. He didn't want to call his doctor on a Tuesday morning and have a "we should run some tests" conversation with the receptionist listening on speaker.

So he typed it into Claude.ai at 11:47pm in his home office. The whole thing. The location of the lump, the texture, how long he'd noticed it, his age, his family history, his weight, the fact that he smoked from 19 to 26 and then quit. Claude gave him a calm, measured walkthrough of differential possibilities, a sober "you should see your doctor in the next two weeks but most lumps in this region are not what you're afraid of," and a list of questions to bring to the appointment. He felt better. He went to bed. He saw his doctor. The lump was a benign cyst. End of story.

Three months later he was in his account changing his email and noticed the chat in his sidebar. "Lump under jaw, possible cancer." Right there in the title Claude had auto-generated. The whole conversation, his full medical and smoking history, sitting in his account.

Nobody had done anything with it. Nobody at Anthropic was going to. But he sat there for a minute thinking about his life insurance application from two years ago, the one where he'd answered "no" to "have you been told to seek medical attention for a possible mass." Technically still true. The lump was benign. The chat was just a chat. But the chat existed, in a database he didn't control, attached to an account with his real name, and he hadn't thought about that until it was already there.

He deleted it. Or he clicked delete. Whether it was actually deleted is a different question, and we'll get to it.

The five categories of risk

Most people, when they think about AI privacy, picture some vague worry about "data being used." The actual risk is more concrete than that. There are five distinct ways a sensitive AI chat can come back to find you.

That last one matters more than people give it credit for. Even if nothing bad ever happens, the existence of a permanent written record of your most private thoughts is its own thing. A lot of people don't want that, and they shouldn't have to want it.

What providers actually do with these chats

Here's the part that surprises people. The big consumer AI products are not designed around privacy. They're designed around capability and engagement. Privacy is a settings page, not a default.

Claude.ai consumer plans (Free, Pro, Team) train on your conversations by default unless you turn it off in data controls. Chats are stored in your account indefinitely. Retention is at least 30 days even after you delete. Subpoenable.

ChatGPT has been under a federal preservation order since 2024. As of this writing, OpenAI is required to retain user conversations indefinitely until the order is lifted, regardless of whether you've deleted them, regardless of whether you've turned off chat history, regardless of plan. Subpoenable.

Anthropic API and Enterprise are different. No training, 7-day operational log retention, no saved chat history. This is the privacy posture most people assume they're getting on the consumer site, but it's only true on the developer-version contract.

The "I'll just delete it later" trap

The most common thing people tell themselves about a sensitive AI chat is "I'll delete it when I'm done." This is a perfectly reasonable thing to think and it doesn't work the way people assume.

On ChatGPT, the 2024 preservation order means deletion from your visible history doesn't propagate to the backend. The conversation is still retained on OpenAI's side, regardless of what your account shows. This isn't OpenAI being dishonest. They're under a court order they can't unilaterally ignore. But the practical effect is that "delete" in the app is, right now, closer to "hide from the sidebar."

On Claude.ai, deletion is real but slow. Anthropic's documentation indicates that conversations may take up to 30 days to fully clear, and there's no guarantee that backups have been pruned in that window. If a subpoena lands during the deletion window, the data is still findable.

And on both platforms, if your account was breached before you deleted (someone with your password logged in, scrolled your history, screenshotted), the deletion happens after the damage is done.

The real lesson

Deletion is a downstream control. It depends on the host actually deleting, on the timing being right, on no preservation order being in effect, on your account not having been read already. If privacy matters, the cleaner answer is to never have a record in the first place.

The structural alternative: no history in the first place

There's a different architecture that solves this without depending on anyone's good behavior. It's how Private Claude is built, and the idea is simple: don't store the conversation anywhere persistent.

Daniel's lump conversation, on Private Claude, would have been exactly the same conversation. The same Claude. The same answers. The same thoughtful walkthrough. The difference is that three months later, when he was changing his email, there would have been nothing in any sidebar to find.

The shift

The point isn't that you have something to hide. The point is that "history exists, but I trust the host to handle it" and "history doesn't exist" are completely different threat models. For genuinely sensitive questions, the second one is the only one that actually solves the problem.

A practical guide for sensitive questions

You don't need to overhaul your AI life. Most of what you ask AI is fine to put in your normal account. Code questions, recipe ideas, travel planning, work emails, brainstorming. None of that needs special treatment. The 90% case is fine where it is.

It's the 10% that needs a different home. Here's a clean way to handle it.

1. Use a private interface for the genuinely sensitive stuff. Private Claude or a similar BYOK tool that runs in your browser and doesn't keep history. This is the conversation about the lump, the debt, the marriage, the question you've never asked anyone. Mental health questions belong here too.

2. Don't include real names or full identifiers when you can avoid it. "My partner" is enough. The full name, last name, and employer adds nothing useful to the answer and a lot of identifying surface to the chat. AI doesn't need your social security number to give you good advice about your taxes.

3. Keep your main AI account for the non-sensitive 90%. Don't try to make ChatGPT or Claude.ai be your private space. They aren't designed for it and you'll keep slipping. Have one account for everyday work and a separate, private space for the rest. Different tools for different jobs.

4. Close the tab when you're done. Not "leave it open in case I want to come back." Not "I'll deal with it later." When the conversation ends, end it. If you used a tool that doesn't keep history, the act of closing the tab is what makes the privacy real.

5. Don't paste the same sensitive question into multiple AI tools. This one is easy to forget. If you ask the same intimate question on ChatGPT, then again on Claude.ai, then again on Gemini to "compare answers," you've now created the same record in three databases under three accounts. Pick one tool, ask once, take the answer.

You're not a criminal. You're not hiding evidence. You're an ordinary person with an ordinary life who deserves a private space to think out loud. The technology to give you that space already exists. You just have to use the version of it that's actually built for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to ask AI about health symptoms or medical questions?

The answers themselves are useful and the AI isn't going to do anything with what you asked. The risk is that the chat sits in your account history and on the provider's servers, where it can be subpoenaed, breached, or seen by anyone with access to your account. If the question is sensitive (a symptom you haven't told anyone about, a condition you might want to keep private from an insurer or employer), use a tool that doesn't keep history. If you've signed in to ChatGPT or Claude.ai on a work account, your employer's admin may have access to your conversations. Even on a personal account on a work laptop, monitoring software can capture what you type. Sensitive personal questions don't belong on work devices, period.

Is it private to use Incognito mode for AI chats?

Browser Incognito doesn't change what the AI provider does with your messages. Your chat still goes to OpenAI or Anthropic and is still stored according to their normal retention policies. Claude.ai has its own Incognito feature that skips your account history, but Anthropic still retains those chats for 30 days for safety review. Browser Incognito mainly stops your local browser from saving cookies and history. It does nothing about what happens server-side.

What categories of sensitive questions are riskiest to ask AI?
