It isn't. They do different things. The reason most Private Claude users keep their Claude Pro subscription isn't that one's better. It's that they're for different conversations.

What each one actually does
Claude Pro
Claude Pro is Anthropic's consumer product. The website at claude.ai. Sign up with email or Google, log in, type messages, your conversations are saved to your account, you can come back tomorrow and pick up where you left off.
Pro gives you priority access during peak times, higher message limits than the free tier, projects (saved spaces with their own context), artifacts (live document and code editing), computer use (Claude can control a virtual computer to do tasks for you), and persistent memory (Claude can remember stuff about you across chats if you let it).
It's optimized for "Claude is my work assistant." Continuity matters. History matters. You want Claude to know what you talked about last week.
Private Claude
Private Claude is built around the opposite principle. The conversation lives in your browser tab while it's open. When you close the tab, the conversation is gone. There is no chat history. There is no saved memory. There is no record at Private Claude, ever.
You use your own Anthropic connection password (a secret you generate at console.anthropic.com) which makes the chat run through the developer version of Claude. The developer version has different rules: no training on your data, operational logs auto-delete after 7 days, and no saved chat history.
It's optimized for "this is for the conversations I don't want to think about later." No record. No file. Nothing to find.

The honest answer to "Pro or Private Claude" is that most Private Claude users don't cancel their Pro subscription. They keep both.
The mental model is the same one most people use for email. You probably have a work email, a personal email, and maybe a third email you give to companies you don't trust. They're all email. You don't pick one. You pick the right one for the message.
