Incognito AI Chat (Without the Quotation Marks)

Real anonymous AI vs the kind that just labels the folder differently.

"Incognito" in 2026 mostly means "we still have it, we just don't show it to you." That's how browser incognito mode works, more or less. Your computer doesn't save a record. Your internet provider, your school network, your employer, the website itself, all still see exactly what you did.

AI incognito modes work the same way. You hit a button. The chat doesn't show up in your saved history. The AI company still receives it, still has it for some retention window, still has to produce it if a court asks. The folder just has a different label.

Whether that matters depends entirely on what you're trying to do. Hide a chat from your spouse who shares your laptop? Most incognito modes work fine. Make a conversation actually undiscoverable? You need something different.

ChatGPT Temporary Chat

OpenAI's incognito mode for ChatGPT is called Temporary Chat. Click the chat-bubble icon in the top right, switch it on, and your conversation isn't saved to your history.

What it does:

What it doesn't do:

Temporary Chat is private from your visible history. It is not private from OpenAI, and it is not private from a court that has already ordered the preservation of every conversation.

Claude Incognito mode

Anthropic's equivalent is called Incognito and works similarly. Click the ghost icon in the top right of Claude.ai when you start a new chat.

What it does:

What it doesn't do:

Same shape as ChatGPT Temporary Chat. Private from the visible account, not private from Anthropic.

The honest framing

Incognito modes from the big AI companies are private from your visible chat history. They are not private from the company itself. If your threat model is "I don't want this on my visible account," they work fine. If your threat model is "I don't want this discoverable later," they don't.

DuckDuckGo AI Chat

DuckDuckGo runs a free AI chat at duck.ai. No account required. They proxy your messages to underlying models (GPT-4o mini, Claude Haiku, Mistral, Llama) and strip identifying info before forwarding.

This is the most legitimate anonymous AI proxy on the internet. DuckDuckGo has a real privacy track record. They don't store the chats. The model providers see the text but not who sent it (DuckDuckGo strips identifiers from the request).

What you get:

What you don't get:

For a one-off anonymous question where you just need an answer, DuckDuckGo AI Chat is hard to beat. For daily use of frontier models with real privacy, you need a different approach.

GPTAnon, AnonChatGPT, Uncensored Chat, and similar

A genre of free anonymous AI sites exists. They mostly work the same way: someone has put their own AI provider account behind a public chat interface and is letting strangers use it.

The honest review:

For a one-off anonymous low-stakes question, fine. For anything sensitive, no. You're trusting an unknown person to handle your data, and they don't owe you anything.

Self-hosted (Ollama, Jan, GPT4All, LM Studio)

The strongest anonymity option. Ollama, Jan, GPT4All, and LM Studio let you run an open-source model on your own computer. The data never leaves your machine. There is no provider.

Tradeoff: the open-source models you can run on a laptop (Llama 3, Mistral, Qwen, DeepSeek) are meaningfully less capable than frontier proprietary models like Claude Opus or GPT-4o. They're improving fast. But for now, if you need the smartest answer, you're paying a real intelligence tax.

Best for: people with strong privacy needs (journalists, activists, researchers handling sensitive sources), people who already have a decent GPU, or anyone who wants full data isolation as a principle.

What's actually private

Strip away the brand names and the marketing. There are three real categories.

1. Hidden from your visible account

ChatGPT Temporary, Claude Incognito. The conversation is still received and held by the AI company for their retention window. You're hiding it from yourself, your roommate, your employer's IT. You're not hiding it from anyone with legal access to the AI company's records.

2. Anonymous proxy

DuckDuckGo AI Chat is the legitimate version. The free anonymous sites are a coin flip. You hide your identity from the model provider but you typically can't use frontier models or get any continuity.

3. Structurally private

Self-hosted models (data never leaves your machine) and developer-version interfaces like Private Claude (no chat history exists, operational logs auto-delete after 7 days, no training). These remove the storage that creates the risk.

The point

If "incognito" is going to mean anything, it has to mean the conversation doesn't end up in someone's database. The button on Claude.ai or ChatGPT doesn't get you that. Self-hosted does. Private Claude does. DuckDuckGo gets close enough for low-stakes one-offs.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT have an incognito mode?

ChatGPT has Temporary Chat, which keeps the conversation out of your visible history and (per OpenAI) excludes it from training. OpenAI still retains the conversation for up to 30 days for safety screening and abuse detection. Under the 2024 court order in the New York Times case, OpenAI is also required to preserve all conversations indefinitely, including temporary ones.

Does Claude have an incognito mode?

Yes. Claude.ai's Incognito mode hides the chat from your visible history, opts it out of training, and doesn't pull from your previous chats or memory. Anthropic still retains incognito chats for 30 days for safety screening and abuse detection. The chat can be subpoenaed during that 30-day window.

What's the most anonymous way to use AI?

If anonymity is the goal, a self-hosted open-source model (Ollama, Jan, GPT4All) is strongest because the chat never leaves your computer. After that, DuckDuckGo AI Chat is the most legitimate anonymous proxy, since you don't need an account and the company has a real privacy track record. Free anonymous proxies of unknown origin are not recommended.

Is DuckDuckGo AI Chat actually private?

Yes, in a real way. DuckDuckGo proxies your messages to underlying models (GPT, Claude, Mistral) and strips identifying information before forwarding. The model providers see the text but not who sent it. DuckDuckGo doesn't store the chats. The tradeoff is no login, no premium models, no history.

Are sites like AnonChatGPT and GPTAnon safe to use?

It depends on who runs them, and you usually don't know. Most are proxies that route your message through someone else's API key to an upstream model. The proxy operator can technically log everything you send. Use them for low-stakes one-off questions, not for sensitive content.

Can I use ChatGPT without an account?

Yes. OpenAI lets you use GPT-4o mini at chatgpt.com without signing in. Your IP address is logged temporarily. This is fine for low-stakes questions but doesn't give you anonymity at the network level. Pair with a VPN if anonymity matters.

What's the difference between incognito mode and Private Claude?

Incognito mode hides the chat from your visible account history but the chat is still received, processed, and retained for 30 days by the AI company. Private Claude uses the developer version of Claude where there's no chat history at all and operational logs auto-delete after 7 days. The whole product is incognito by default, not as a special mode you have to remember to enable.

Use Claude. Keep it private.

Use your Anthropic connection password. Start free with 50 Haiku and 25 Sonnet messages. Upgrade to $17/mo for Opus, file uploads, and Markdown exports.
