Incognito AI Chat (Without the Quotation Marks)

Real anonymous AI vs the kind that just labels the folder differently.

ChatGPT Temporary Chat

OpenAI's incognito mode for ChatGPT is called Temporary Chat. Click the chat-bubble icon in the top right, switch it on, and your conversation isn't saved to your history.

What it does:

• The conversation doesn't appear in your sidebar history
• Per OpenAI, it's not used for training
• Memory is excluded (Claude won't reference past chats)

What it doesn't do:

• OpenAI still receives the chat. Their servers process every message.
• OpenAI retains the conversation for up to 30 days for safety screening and abuse detection.
• Per the 2024 federal court order in the New York Times case, OpenAI was ordered to preserve all ChatGPT conversations indefinitely. Including Temporary Chats. Including deleted ones. The order has not been lifted at the time of this writing.

Temporary Chat is private from your visible history. It is not private from OpenAI, and it is not private from a court that has already ordered the preservation of every conversation.

Claude Incognito mode

Anthropic's equivalent is called Incognito and works similarly. Click the ghost icon in the top right of Claude.ai when you start a new chat.

What it does:

• The conversation isn't saved to your visible history
• It's not used for training, even if your account has training on by default
• Claude won't pull from your previous chats or memory

What it doesn't do:

• Anthropic still receives the chat
• Anthropic retains incognito chats for 30 days by default for safety screening and abuse detection
• The chat can be subpoenaed during that 30-day window

DuckDuckGo AI Chat

DuckDuckGo runs a free AI chat at duck.ai. No account required. They proxy your messages to underlying models (GPT-4o mini, Claude Haiku, Mistral, Llama) and strip identifying info before forwarding.

This is the most legitimate anonymous AI proxy on the internet. DuckDuckGo has a real privacy track record. They don't store the chats. The model providers see the text but not who sent it (DuckDuckGo strips identifiers from the request).

What you get:

• No login
• No saved chat history (unless you opt to save locally on your device)
• Smaller models (mini variants of GPT-4o, Claude Haiku, Llama, Mistral)
• Reasonable speed and quality for everyday questions

What you don't get:

• Frontier models (Claude Opus, Sonnet at full strength, GPT-4o full)
• File uploads, image generation, voice mode, computer use
• Long-running conversations (no account, so no real continuity)

For a one-off anonymous question where you just need an answer, DuckDuckGo AI Chat is hard to beat. For daily use of frontier models with real privacy, you need a different approach.

GPTAnon, AnonChatGPT, Uncensored Chat, and similar

A genre of free anonymous AI sites exists. They mostly work the same way: someone has put their own AI provider account behind a public chat interface and is letting strangers use it.

The honest review:

• You don't know who's running them. Most are anonymous operators. Some are reputable. Some aren't. You can't tell from the outside.
• The proxy operator can technically log everything. Whether they do is up to them. There's no audit, no compliance, no track record.
• The model quality is usually capped at free-tier or older models. No one's putting Claude Opus behind a free public proxy.
• "Uncensored" usually means the operator has system-prompted away some safety guardrails. Whatever you think of that, it doesn't make the service more private.

For a one-off anonymous low-stakes question, fine. For anything sensitive, no. You're trusting an unknown person to handle your data, and they don't owe you anything.

Self-hosted (Ollama, Jan, GPT4All, LM Studio)

The strongest anonymity option. Ollama, Jan, GPT4All, and LM Studio let you run an open-source model on your own computer. The data never leaves your machine. There is no provider.

Tradeoff: the open-source models you can run on a laptop (Llama 3, Mistral, Qwen, DeepSeek) are meaningfully less capable than frontier proprietary models like Claude Opus or GPT-4o. They're improving fast. But for now, if you need the smartest answer, you're paying a real intelligence tax.

Best for: people with strong privacy needs (journalists, activists, researchers handling sensitive sources), people who already have a decent GPU, or anyone who wants full data isolation as a principle.

What's actually private

Strip away the brand names and the marketing. There are three real categories.

1. Hidden from your visible account

ChatGPT Temporary, Claude Incognito. The conversation is still received and held by the AI company for their retention window. You're hiding it from yourself, your roommate, your employer's IT. You're not hiding it from anyone with legal access to the AI company's records.

2. Anonymous proxy

DuckDuckGo AI Chat is the legitimate version. The free anonymous sites are a coin flip. You hide your identity from the model provider but you typically can't use frontier models or get any continuity.

3. Structurally private

Self-hosted models (data never leaves your machine) and developer-version interfaces like Private Claude (no chat history exists, operational logs auto-delete after 7 days, no training). These remove the storage that creates the risk.
